Headwall Photonics is a global leader in the design and manufacturing spectral imaging systems and high performance spectrometer instruments based on diffraction gratings optical technology. Headwall Photonics is urgently seeking a versatile, creative, and hands-on Manufacturing Engineer to support production in spectral instrumentation lab. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the employee is a key contributor to the success of Headwall Photonics’ manufacturing plan, focused on the repeatable production of process-sensitive devices in a dynamic environment.

This position will initially be located in Fitchburg, Massachusetts before moving to Headwall's NEW facility in Bolton, Massachusetts, along the Route 495 technology belt.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains process sheets, travelers, and production logs

  • Identifies and develops new manufacturing and test tools and software to improve efficiency and repeatability

  • Leads the transition of new products from prototype stage to final production control and release

  • Identifies and implements changes for yield improvement and cost reduction

  • Assists R&D with new product development

  • Participates in root cause / corrective action process for returned materials

  • Trains new technicians in appropriate techniques and provides periodic independent review of the quality of work of trained employees

  • As required, assists in the production of deliverables to meet schedule and cost objectives

    Required Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 5+ years’ experience as a manufacturing engineer in a high-mix, high technology product environment

  • Previous work experience at an ISO 9001 certified organization

  • Demonstrated application of statistical tools and lean techniques to solve manufacturing problems

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with multiple functions to resolve issues

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Manufacturing experience with spectral instrumentation and optical systems

  • Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt

  • Data entry and extraction from an ERP/MRP software system using Solidworks, MATLAB, or any major programming languages
