Software Engineer

Job Description:

The selected candidate for this position will join the software development team that is advancing the field of hyperspectral imaging by providing easy-to-use data collection, image processing, sensor fusion, and machine learning tools to our customers. The successful candidate will have significant opportunities for career growth in the development of scientific and mathematical software applications and algorithms. This includes video processing, test development platforms, UAV and Airborne image manipulation (including geo-location and orthorectification processes), industrial machine vision, and many other applications.

This role will have responsibilities in both sustaining of existing products and in new product development. The candidate will be responsible for the specification, design, development and documentation of code. Our codebase is written in C++ and an eligible candidate should be proficient in these tools. Knowledge of the QT framework is a plus but can also be learned on the job. Knowledge of other machine vision languages, toolkits, and libraries is also a plus.
Additionally, the candidate may be called upon to use their capabilities to support automated build process, testing, and QA/QC.

Skills & Education:

Required eduction: Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related discipline and 5+ years of experience.

Optical Engineer

Summary:

The qualified candidate will assume the role of Optical Engineer for the development of sophisticated, miniaturized imaging spectrometers. These commercial instruments are designed for the Remote Sensing, Industrial, and Research markets. They are used primarily for the analysis and monitoring of agriculture, food, and other products. Additionally, the company participates in the development of airborne and space-based sensors for the monitoring of greenhouse gasses and other environmental chemicals.

This role will have responsibilities in both sustaining development of existing products and in new product development. The candidate will be responsible for the specification, design, development and documentation of complete optical systems. This individual should have strong proficiency in using Zemax for optical design and significant experience in opto-mechanical design issues. A thorough understanding of optical performance, tolerancing, athermalization, and sensitivity analysis is important. Experience designing tests and fixtures to verify optical components and systems is also important.

Qualifications:

  • A Masters level degree or higher in optical engineering, physics, or other related field with at least 5 years of experience designing optical systems.
  • Solid understanding of the principles and methods of optical design including component selection, free-space layout, system tolerancing, and passive athermalization.
  • Proficient with Zemax to design and analyze optical system designs for performance, including ability to analyze system-level characteristics such as spectral and spatial resolution. 
  • Experience designing, constructing, and measuring fixtures for optical component and optical system verification
  • Understanding of spectrometers and the figures of merit used to design and analyze them. Understanding of the tradeoffs between performance, cost, size, and weight.
  • Ability to assist in the design and analysis of vibration resistant and athermalized mechanical mounting schemes for optical components.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work individually as well as with a design or manufacturing team

Other Valuable Skills / Experience:

  • Experience in the design, characterization, or manufacturing process of holographic diffraction gratings. Experience with PC Grate or similar grating design software.

Federal Sales Executive - Spectral Sensor Products

With a focus on US federal government agencies and departments, this Sales Executive is a key contributor to the achievement of company revenue goals across a broad set of military, homeland security, intel, as well as civilian agency applications. Specific account responsibilities will focus on program and R&D sales of spectral imaging sensors and handheld instrumentation to government customers as well as prime government contractors.

Main areas of responsibility:

  • Establishing and executing on a Federal Sales Plan for revenue capture

  • Identifying prospects and closing new business opportunities

  • Building strategic partnerships among the government prime industry

  • Developing targeted sales campaigns

 Senior Systems Applications Engineer

 To maintain and accelerate its rapid global growth, Headwall is seeking a Senior Systems Applications Engineer to be located at its facility in Bolton, Massachusetts. The successful candidate will be a high-profile contributor to the Company's growth and will have responsibility for driving revenue while managing Headwall's sales team and its channel partners.

We are seeking highly qualified candidates with a very broad engineering skill set, including optics, systems, electrical, mechanical and software to support the development of hyperspectral imaging systems and technologies in a wide range of applications.  The ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of in-depth and hands-on experience with optical systems development and applications deployment.

In working with some of the best-known organizations in the world, the selected candidate will lead strategic projects focused on solving important problems in key market areas; drawing upon industry knowledge, scientific principles, and personal experience to develop robust solutions that can be deployed into the global marketplace. This individual is responsible for developing and implementing technical solutions for some of the world’s most challenging and relevant applications – from developing small satellite payloads to crop disease detection on UAVs to implementing food safety machine vision solutions on conveyor lines to non-invasive diagnosis in surgical suites.

  Applications Support Specialist

 A critical role in support of the global sales and marketing organization, the Applications Support Specialist will support Headwall's achievement of the annual sales target.  Primary responsibilities will be to provide advanced pre sales hyperspectral application support to the global sales engineers. The specialist will assist in the configuration of systems for quotation, evaluate potential application needs, and occasionally provide field based demonstrations or seminars. This position will be based at Headwall's facility in Bolton, Massachusetts.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assess customer special request requirements through sales and recommend the most appropriate solution/configuration

  • Evaluate products and service offerings in terms of product requirements and the customers technical needs.

  • Provide summary report and data package for commercial presentation after evaluations

  • Coordinate and demonstrate instruments in customer laboratories and provide applications support to potential customers to advance opportunities through the sales pipeline

  • Provide additional customer training and application support to maximize customer experience, satisfaction and to build brand loyalty.

  • Conduct workshops, seminars or focus groups in line with agreed plans.

  • Takes ownership of customer problems and issues, works to resolve them and see them through to resolution.   • Working knowledge of UV-VIS/NIR/SWIR optical systems and design principles/trades

  • Working knowledge of focal plane arrays, FPA technologies and integration of FPAs into imaging systems

  • Characterization of imaging systems including radiometric and spectral characterization, image quality, performance metrics, etc., including test station design

  • Strong technical knowledge and ability to communicate technical information in concise and understandable manner. Outstanding communication skills both verbally and written. Prior experience in making technical presentations.

  • Has a positive attitude that fosters a pro-active ethos in the rest of the team and department. Creates a climate in which people want to do their best. Is ambitious for the business

  • Travel as required to meet the needs of the role which is expected to be at or above 20% of the time, with a majority of that time being overnight travel. Some International travel will be required. Able to work outside core hours when required.

Diffraction Grating Process Engineer

 Along with rapid growth in sales, comes increased production capacity at our world-class facility in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Roles & Responsibility:

  • Drive and support problem solving efforts on an as-needed basis

  • Provide ongoing engineering support to a staff of holographic grating fabrication and test technicians working in a class (1000, 10,000) cleanroom environment
  • Design of grating fabrication & test fixtures
  • Stage & manage process travelers for new grating designs
  • Drive process improvements by designing and executing targeted experiments
  • Assist with the maintenance and calibration of specialized fabrication and test equipment
  • Interact with other engineers and sales staff as needed to provide timely responses to customer inquiries
  • Drive and support problem solving efforts on an as-needed basis

Skillsets Required:

  • Design of experiments, including error analysis
  • Facility in MSWord, Outlook, Excel
