UTC Aerospace Systems Selects Headwall Hyperspectral Imaging Sensor For SYERS-2 Program

Spectral Exploitation Offers Enhanced ISR Functionality for High Altitude Platform

Fitchburg, MA, November 8, 2012—Headwall Photonics announces that its Hyperspec sensor has been chosen by UTC Aerospace Systems (formerly Goodrich Corporation) for the Senior Year Electro-Optical Reconnaissance Sensor (SYERS-2) platform. SYERS-2 is currently used on the U.S. Air Force U-2 ‘Dragon Lady’ for very high altitude reconnaissance missions. Headwall’s hyperspectral sensor will provide SYERS-2 with enhanced intelligence and surveillance capabilities.

SYERS and HyperspecThe Headwall Hyperspec imaging sensor was selected based on the demanding imaging performance needed for advanced sensor surveillance capabilities. Key attributes of the selected Hyperspec sensor platform are optimized signal-to-noise performance as well as customized spectral and spatial resolution, all tightly coupled with a spectral processing system.

Hyperspectral imaging represents a critical sensing technology that allows DoD organizations to identify an object within the field of view of the sensor based on the target’s chemical "fingerprint" or spectral signature rather than relying solely on visual appearance.

Headwall Photonics Names Peter Clemens as Director of Engineering

Peter brings thirty years of engineering and applications expertise in the design and development of optical imaging platforms. His experience working in engineering and operations has resulted in over 50 different imaging products brought from design development into full-scale production.

Before joining Headwall, Pete was Technical Director of Operations at BAE Systems. While at BAE, Pete held many roles within systems engineering, engineering management and operations. Over that time period, the company transitioned several times, from Honeywell electro-optics to Loral infrared imaging systems to Lockheed Martin imaging systems and then finally to BAE Systems.

Headwall Delivers Small, Lightweight Hyperspectral Sensor to ACT LLC

Gimbal-Mounted Micro-Hyperspec® Sensor Provides Precision Hyperspectral Imaging for Key NAVAIR UAV Program

Fitchburg, MA, July 3, 2012 - As a result of tactical hyperspectral sensor trials with small military UAVs, Headwall Photonics has received a follow-on contract for program deployment of its Micro-Hyperspec® hyperspectral sensor to NAVAIR with Advanced Coherent Technologies LLC (ACT) of San Diego, CA serving as program integrator. The very small hyperspectral sensor operates in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range of 900nm - 1700nm and will be used to Navair ACT Headwalldetect specific target materials from a small gimbal mounted on a TigerShark Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). The NAVAIR program successfully brings together leading-edge spectral imaging technology from Headwall and ACT so that mission-critical decisions can be made accurately and rapidly.
 
Jon Schoonmaker, head of Contracting and Sales for ACT, mentioned some of the key characteristics that the Headwall sensor provided. "The aberration-corrected, concentric design used by Headwall gives us very low distortion and a very high signal-to-noise ratio," said Schoonmaker. "Headwall optimized the package for size, weight and power (SWaP) because the 7-inch gimbal will also contain other electronics and sensors as part of the payload." Schoonmaker concluded by remarking on the collaboration between ACT and Headwall. "Our companies worked together to develop a solution that NAVAIR is very eager to have in their arsenal. The TigerShark is a small UAV platform and SWaP is a performance driver."

Fitchburg, MA, June 20, 2012 - R&D Magazine has just announced that the Hyperspec® RECON™ hyperspectral sensor has been chosen as a recipient of a 2012 R&D 100 Award. The annual award competition is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. An independent judging panel along with editors of R&D Magazine chose the top 100 products; results were made public R&D 100 Awardtoday.

High Efficiency Hyperspec® SWIR Sensor Selected by U.S. Navy

NRL program focus on establishing reliable hyperspectral sensor payloads

 for UAVs

Fitchburg, MA, May 1, 2012 — Headwall Photonics, a leading designer and manufacturer of hyperspectral imaging sensors, announced that its High Efficiency Hyperspec® SWIR (Short-wave, Infrared) sensors have been selected for airborne applications by the U.S. Navy.  The High Efficiency Hyperspec SWIR sensor, with a spectral range of 950 to 2500 nm, successfully underwent rigorous performance testing at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).

The Headwall High Efficiency Hyperspec® SWIR sensor recently passed a very demanding set of hyperspectral performance tests instituted by the program team at NRL to ensure that the sensor would meet technical objectives. Specific tests were devised for spectral resolution, spatial resolution, and MTF performance.
