The Position

The Quality and Continuous Improvement Manager will drive company initiatives to improve operational efficiencies as well as ensure preparedness for external quality audits for both our Bolton and Fitchburg sites. This position requires a high energy positive attitude with the capability and desire to be continuously engaged with the Team to drive projects to completion.

Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing & Operations, the Quality and CI Manager also acts as a liaison between Company and our Suppliers while engaging Customers for feedback and improvement. The Quality Manager will select and drive high impact improvements, be responsible for departmental processes/procedures, and be involved with technical communications with the customer.

With a focus on quality and continuous improvement, the Quality Manager is accountable for timely and detailed oriented results. The impact of the projects will all make a positive contribution to lean manufacturing improvements and process efficiencies to improve operational profitability.

Essential Job Functions

  • Create a lean culture by mentoring and creating training opportunities.
  • Internal quality system audit and remediation skills
  • Collecting production data, analyzing outputs, and determining corrective courses of action to promote safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Identify ways to eliminate waste in production processes.
  • Analyze and identify opportunities to reduce process variation, improve process capabilities and optimize process performance.
  • Work with management to identify new process improvement opportunities in the areas of quality, cost, performance, and preventive and predictive maintenance.
  • In-depth experience implementing Lean, 5S, Value Stream Map and Kaizen
  • Review and update business procedures and documents.
  • Must have experience working in a regulated industry (ISO 17025, ISO 9001 or other)
  • Quality System knowledge with ability to rapidly identify and resolve system gaps.
  • Independently facilitate CAR, CAPA or Non-conformances Root Cause analysis [RCA].
  • Evidence of effectively creating Prepared Quality System documents nd records.
  • Ability to gather and quantify quality metrics and management presentation material.
  • Support the Quality function and the business by maintaining professional business ethics and ensuring customers are treated with efficiency, courtesy, and respect.

Educational & Experience Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or other related technical discipline
  • Green Belt Certification required; Black Belt preferred.
  • An outgoing detail-oriented person with superior communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong computer desktop tool proficiency & other manufacturing software (MS-Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Routinely working in cross functional teams and influencing peers on project tasks.
  • Proven experience effectively prioritizing workload to meet deadlines & work objectives.
  • Effective quantitative ability, exceptional organizational (records) talent and analytical skills.
Experience Required
  • 5-7 years: industry related experience within the optics industry and/or analytical instruments

The qualified candidate will assume the role of Optical Engineer for the development of sophisticated, miniaturized imaging spectrometers. These commercial instruments are designed for the Remote Sensing, Industrial, and Research markets. They are used primarily for the analysis and monitoring of agriculture, food, and other products. Additionally, the company participates in the development of airborne and space-based sensors for the monitoring of greenhouse gases and other environmental chemicals.

This role will have responsibilities for sustaining development of existing products and for new product development. The candidate will be responsible for the specification, design, development and documentation of complete optical systems. This individual should have strong proficiency in using Zemax for optical design and significant experience in opto-mechanical design issues. A thorough understanding of optical performance, tolerancing, athermalization, and sensitivity analysis is important. Experience designing tests and fixtures to verify optical components and systems is also important.

Qualifications:

  • A Masters level degree or higher in optical engineering, physics, or other related field with at least 5 years of experience designing optical systems.
  • Solid understanding of the principles and methods of optical design including component selection, free-space layout, system tolerancing, and passive athermalization.
  • Proficient with Zemax to design and analyze optical system designs for performance, including ability to analyze system-level characteristics such as spectral and spatial resolution. 
  • Experience designing, constructing, and measuring fixtures for optical component and optical system verification
  • Understanding of spectrometers and the figures of merit used to design and analyze them. Understanding of the tradeoffs between performance, cost, size, and weight.
  • Ability to assist in the design and analysis of vibration resistant and athermalized mechanical mounting schemes for optical components.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work individually as well as with a design or manufacturing team

Other Valuable Skills / Experience:

  • Experience in the design, characterization, or manufacturing process of holographic diffraction gratings. Experience with PC Grate or similar grating design software.
  • Knowledge and experience with thin film coating design.
  • Experience designing, integrating, and characterizing spectrographs and spectrometers. 
  • Experience with aerospace qualification and testing
  • Project management skills

Job Description:

The selected candidate for this position will join the software development team which is advancing the field of hyperspectral imaging by providing easy-to-use data collection, image processing, sensor fusion, and machine learning tools to our customers. The successful candidate will have significant opportunities for career growth in the development of scientific and mathematical software applications and algorithms. This includes video processing, image manipulation, machine vision, and data visualization.

This role will have responsibilities in new product development and sustaining of existing products. The candidate will be responsible for the specification, design, development, and documentation of code. Our codebase is written in C++ and an eligible candidate should be proficient in this language. Knowledge of the QT framework is a plus but can also be learned on the job. Knowledge of other machine vision toolkits and libraries (such as OpenCV) is also a plus.

Additionally, the candidate may be called upon to use their capabilities to support automated build process and testing.

Required Skills & Education:

Required education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, equivalent technical field, or practical experience. At least 3+ years of experience.

Main areas of responsibility

Requirements

  • Candidate must have 5+ years of relevant marketing communications experience within a high-tech environment
  • Familiarity and experience with the Zoho CRM platform highly desired
  • Experience with HubSpot a plus
  • Experience with Constant Contact a plus
  • iMovie, Camtasia, or other video-editing platform experience a plus
  • Strong writing skills a must
  • Must be highly skilled using both Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud applications (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)
