In the Product Management role you will work with cross-disciplinary teams including engineering, design, operations, sales, marketing, service delivery teams, as well as customers to build and execute product roadmaps and continuously seek new opportunities for growth. You will be a key player in the broader company strategy to make our spectral products more connected, leveraging data acquisition and exploitation products for our customers, across the entire lifecycle of our products from design, manufacture to next-generation concepts.
You will have experience and knowledge in marketing, product launch planning and execution, pricing strategy, product development and lifecycle management, and product suitability and readiness with strong knowledge of spectroscopy and analytical instrumentation.
You will have responsibility for understanding important market trends, competitive environments, and key influencers.
Success in this role includes a proven ability to bring ultimately successful products to market, experience in product lifecycle management, ability to work with engineering and sales teams, and an entrepreneurial drive with an innovative mindset. You must be able to transform quantitative and qualitative data from our customers into insights and strategy to drive product development priorities. You will measure product performance, keep your pulse on the customer, and assess acceptable market tradeoffs. You can break down complex problems into steps that drive product development.

Headwall builds spectral solutions that address important problems across key markets. You will play a hands-on role in defining the vision, prioritizing features, and managing the product roadmaps for solutions. This role will also work closely with engineering, design, product, manufacturing operations and finance teams to challenge the boundaries of what is possible.

Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, the successful candidate will be highly collaborative, technically savvy, and passionate about delivering impactful user experiences to customers.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field including one of several of the following: Optics, ME, EE, SW, Physics, Life Sciences, Math, and broad technical knowledge. Advanced degree preferred

  • Experience managing day-to-day technical and design direction

The Director/VP of Manufacturing Operations leads operations in the areas of lasers, optics, photonics, electronics, machine vision, motion control, vibration control, and opto-mechanical technologies.

Responsibility for lean/efficient management of Production, Manufacturing and Test Engineering, ISO quality programs, and Supply Chain management. Requires skills and experience in profitably scaling production operations in a growth environment. Development of production budgets, staffing/hiring plans and capital expenditures. Implementing continuous improvement through Kaizen approaches and value stream analysis to drive greater profitability.

  • Ensure delivery of year-over-year savings on direct & indirect spend; maximize material availability to ensure high levels of productivity and customer service via on-time delivery; reduce excess inventory to improve working capital turns and maximize effective use of physical space.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • BS in engineering or related scientific discipline, MS or advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in the Laser, Optics and photonics industry preferred
  • US Citizen or Green Card status
  • APICS certification (CPIM) preferred
  • P&L experience required

Job Description:

The selected candidate for this position will join the software development team which is advancing the field of hyperspectral imaging by providing easy-to-use data collection, image processing, sensor fusion, and machine learning tools to our customers. The successful candidate will have significant opportunities for career growth in the development of scientific and mathematical software applications and algorithms. This includes video processing, image manipulation, machine vision, and data visualization.

This role will have responsibilities in new product development and sustaining of existing products. The candidate will be responsible for the specification, design, development, and documentation of code. Our codebase is written in C++ and an eligible candidate should be proficient in this language. Knowledge of the QT framework is a plus but can also be learned on the job. Knowledge of other machine vision toolkits and libraries (such as OpenCV) is also a plus.

Additionally, the candidate may be called upon to use their capabilities to support automated build process and testing.

Required Skills & Education:

The qualified candidate will assume the role of Optical Engineer for the development of sophisticated, miniaturized imaging spectrometers. These commercial instruments are designed for the Remote Sensing, Industrial, and Research markets. They are used primarily for the analysis and monitoring of agriculture, food, and other products. Additionally, the company participates in the development of airborne and space-based sensors for the monitoring of greenhouse gases and other environmental chemicals.

This role will have responsibilities for sustaining development of existing products and for new product development. The candidate will be responsible for the specification, design, development and documentation of complete optical systems. This individual should have strong proficiency in using Zemax for optical design and significant experience in opto-mechanical design issues. A thorough understanding of optical performance, tolerancing, athermalization, and sensitivity analysis is important. Experience designing tests and fixtures to verify optical components and systems is also important.


  • A Masters level degree or higher in optical engineering, physics, or other related field with at least 5 years of experience designing optical systems.
  • Solid understanding of the principles and methods of optical design including component selection, free-space layout, system tolerancing, and passive athermalization.
  • Proficient with Zemax to design and analyze optical system designs for performance, including ability to analyze system-level characteristics such as spectral and spatial resolution. 
  • Experience designing, constructing, and measuring fixtures for optical component and optical system verification
  • Understanding of spectrometers and the figures of merit used to design and analyze them. Understanding of the tradeoffs between performance, cost, size, and weight.
  • Ability to assist in the design and analysis of vibration resistant and athermalized mechanical mounting schemes for optical components.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
