Advanced Sensor Design Detects Objects Based on Chemical Composition
Fitchburg, MA; June 1, 2010 - To further enhance the US Army's ability to detect and monitor threats, Headwall Photonics announced the availability of the Hyperspec™ Point & Stare imaging sensor, the industry's most advanced sensor for ground-based spectral imaging. Headwall's Hyperspec™ Point & Stare sensor allows the Department of Defense and Homeland Security to deploy high performance chemical imaging sensors for ground-based applications such as forward base protection and border security.
Hyperspectral imaging allows the US Army to identify objects within the field of view of the sensor based on chemical composition rather than the object's visual appearance. The Hyperspec™ Point & Stare sensor is deployed on a stationary platform and rapidly scans the area in front of the sensor for objects that may be visually difficult to discriminate. The Hyperspec™ sensor is designed to be mast-mounted and field deployable by trailer or directly mounted on a vehicle.
By expanding the military's arsenal of chemical imaging sensor capabilities for ground-based missions, Headwall Photonics further extends the sensor capability and application potential of the performance-leading Hyperspec™ family of hyperspectral imaging instruments. Headwall's current hyperspectral sensor products also include imaging sensors for aircraft deployment (both piloted and UAV platforms) as well as sensor systems for small satellite payloads.
This first Hyperspec™ Point & Stare sensor model offers spectral imaging performance over the visible to near-infrared range of 400 to 1000 nm. The Hyperspec™ Point & Stare sensor, mounted on Headwall's motorized pan and tilt unit, is a fully integrated instrument complete with hyperspectral software, embedded processors for rapid image acquisition and data processing, internal calibration sub-assembly, and environmental management modules all housed within a rugged housing designed for very harsh environments. Headwall's Hyperspec™ Point & Stare sensor will soon be available for other spectral ranges, specifically the SWIR (1000-2500 nm) , NIR(900 - 1700 nm), and Extended VNIR spectral regions (500 -1700 nm).
