Accurate and reliable classification models can be generated using the Headwall MV.X and perClass Mira software on a PC. Those models are then uploaded to IP67-rated MV.X imaging systems on the production line with no need for dedicated computers to store and process the raw hyperspectral data. Amazingly the compact MV.X systems host a runtime version of perClass Mira that outputs the classified data through an industry-standard GenICam interface to robotic systems to take action along the line without any further processing.

The pairing of Headwall’s MV.X and perClass’ Mira platforms allow customers to rapidly deploy solutions that can be easily updated if requirements or situations change; for example, the material being inspected changes or even more accurate classification models are developed over time.

Hyperspec VNIR and SWIR imaging sensors launched for Japan Space Systems earth monitoring mission aboard the International Space Station

From Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Headwall announced that its High-Efficiency Hyperspec Sensor System was launched into space for a multi-year, earth-monitoring research mission aboard the International Space Station. The mission known by the name of HISUI (Hyperspectral Imager SUIte) within the earth-observation community supports research being conducted by Japan Space Systems, a leading space exploration organization in Japan.

The Headwall sensor payload consists of two custom, highperformance imaging spectrometers. The High-Efficiency Hyperspec VNIR covers the spectral range from 400nm to 1000nm and the High- Efficiency Hyperspec SWIR covers the spectral range of 900nm to 2500nm. Together they deliver 185 spectral bands over a 20 km swath with 20 x 30 meter spatial resolution. HISUI itself consists of the imaging portion installed in the Exposed Facility (EF) and a mission data recorder installed in the Pressurized Module (PM) of the Japan Experiment Module (JEM) for a three-year mission life.

The Headwall hyperspectral sensor payload was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 12:29pm EST / 17:29 GMT-UTC on December 5, 2019. The Headwall team viewed the launch from the Kennedy Space Center observatory along with representatives from the Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) and senior management from Japan Space Systems.

Bolton, MA – September 18, 2019 –Headwall Photonics proudly announced that the Optical Society (OSA) has awarded the 2019 Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award to the company for successful development of the state-of-the-art Chlorophyll Fluorescence Sensor for airborne imaging solar-induced fluorescence (SIF).

As described in the award, the Headwall Special Projects Team is recognized for “the successful development of a compact, rugged, and lightweight imaging spectrometer, optimized for cost-effective airborne retrieval of chlorophyll fluorescence emission signatures monitoring plant health in near-real-time at simultaneously high spectral and spatial resolutions.”

OSA President Ursula Gibson said during the award ceremony in Washington, DC, “OSA is proud to honor the teamwork and innovation that created this new technology to improve the way we monitor the health of our planet’s ecosystems and global agriculture.”

The ability to take direct measurements of SIF can be used as an indicator of plant stress and crop health. It can also be used to provide more accurate estimates of species composition, seasonal variations, and physiological status.

Headwall engineers along with science partners from NASA and Brown University delivered the spectrometer just 13 months after initial project discussions and test results confirmed near-theoretical instrument performance.

Headwall also announced that the monetary portion of the award will be donated to a local high school Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) program and to a deserving student at Brown University.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award, which was established by OSA in 1989 and in 2007 was named in remembrance of Paul F. Forman, who helped raise visibility for the field of optical engineering. The team award recognizes technical achievements such as product engineering, process, software and patent development, as well as contributions to society such as engineering education, publication and management, and public appreciation of optical engineering.

Headwall Selected to Provide Spectral Imaging Technology for High Speed Detection of Opioid Packages in Real Time

Battelle selects Headwall hyperspectral sensors for machine vision Opioid Detection Challenge

Bolton, MA – September 9, 2019 –Headwall announced that its hyperspectral imaging technology is part of a proposal by Battelle chosen as a first-stage finalist for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate Opioid Detection Challenge.

opioid-splash-imageThe Automated Multimodal Opioid Detection system by Battelle uses Headwall hyperspectral imaging sensors, as well as dual-energy radiography and machine-learning algorithms, to non-invasively detect opioids in packages without disrupting the flow of mail.

According to the White House, the abuse of opioids such as fentanyl has created an unprecedented public health crisis across the United States. In 2017, approximately 50,000 Americans died from opioid overdoses. International mail has been identified as a route for illicit opioids entering the United States, commonly transported in nearly pure, powdered form. Consequently, large-scale drug trafficking can occur via small packages sent in the mail.

As part of the comprehensive government effort to address the crisis, DHS S&T, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), are seeking novel, automated, nonintrusive, user-friendly and well-developed designs for tools and technologies. The $1.55 million prize competition attracted 83 submissions from around the world.

The Battelle/Headwall system now moves on to a 14-week accelerator stage, during which a deployable prototype will be developed. Government and industry mentors will provide specialized support on topics such as the inspection process, trace detection, artificial intelligence, and user design. These tools would be deployed in international mail, express consignment facilities, and other environments across the country.
