Headwall & Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Awarded Contract for High-Endurance Fixed-Wing Hyperspectral Imaging UAV for Wide Area Precision Agriculture

Project funded in part by the BIRD (Binational Industrial Research and Development) Foundation

Bolton, MA – August 1, 2019 –Headwall, the industry leader in turnkey hyperspectral imaging solutions for remote sensing and precision agriculture, and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), a leader in UAV technology, announced that a project valued at  approximately $1 million USD for large-scale precision agriculture has been awarded by the Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation to develop a high endurance UAV and hyperspectral imaging solution for agricultural customers with thousands of hectares of crops.

Image courtesy Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI); drone over agricultural fieldDevelopment of the Precision Agriculture Decision Support System will utilize a custom-designed and manufactured wide-area hyperspectral imaging payload and a fixed-wing UAV designed for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) missions, as well as analytics that allow accurate assessment of crop and soil conditions as well as crop disease over a wide area with high resolution and positional accuracy.

Projects submitted to the BIRD Foundation are reviewed by evaluators appointed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Israel Innovation Authority.

Headwall Adds Leadership for Engineering & Product Development

Dennis Merrill Hired as Vice President to Lead Engineering Department

Bolton, MA – July 1, 2019 – Headwall Photonics, Inc., the industry leader in turnkey hyperspectral and multispectral imaging solutions and spectral instrumentation for a variety of market segments, announced that Dennis Merrill has joined the Headwall team as Vice President of Engineering. Dennis will be responsible for leading Headwall’s engineering department, including hardware, software, integrated systems, and research & development teams, and will report to Headwall CEO David Bannon as a member of the executive team.

Dennis arrives at Headwall with over 20 years of experience in the design, manufacture, and commercialization of spectroscopic tools for the industrial, medical, and scientific markets. He previously co-founded and served as the Chief Technology Officer of Galaxy Scientific, a company pioneering realtime FT-NIR spectroscopy for food and agriculture. Previously, Dennis held executive roles in engineering and product development for various instrument companies such as Thermo Fisher Scientific where he led the development of handheld and benchtop Raman and FT-IR instruments. Dennis has brought over 20 spectroscopic products to market.

Headwall Expands Executive Leadership Team

With High-Growth Markets, Donald Battistoni Hired to Lead Worldwide Sales & Marketing

Don will be responsible for leading and developing Headwall’s entire commercial organization. Don helped guide Zygo through its acquisition by AMETEK®, Inc. in 2014 and with his leadership, Zygo set company records in 2018 for revenues and profitability.

Headwall Hires Christian Felsheim as Bus Dev & OEM Account Manager

Bolton, MA – December 19, 2018 – Further enhancing business operations in Europe, Headwall Photonics, a world leader in turnkey hyperspectral imaging platforms and instrumentation, announced today that Christian Felsheim has joined the sales team as Business Development and OEM Account Manager for the European region. Throughout his career, Christian has focused on transforming powerful, complex technology into customer value.

Christian brings scientific and industrial imaging experience, having previously served as Department Head at Hortmann AG and Sensomotoric Instruments where he launched eye-tracking technology for a variety of diagnostics, and as Sales Manager for Sensovation, a leading manufacturer of deep-cooled scientific cameras for endoscopy and OEM customers in Europe and the US.

Christian also served as Head of OEM Sales at Andor Technology, extending the company’s reach into the life science and machine vision markets, and later joined JAI A/S, a manufacturer of area and linescan cameras for machine vision, food sorting, and intelligent traffic systems (ITS) as VP Sales EMEA.

Christian holds a Diplom in Neurobiology and Computer Science from the University of Tübingen, a Vordiplom in Biology from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and a Business Administration and Management certificate from ILM.
